WHO WE ARE

  • Marco is a Spanish-Brazilian photographer and visual journalist currently available for assignments in South Florida. His interests are in producing stories related to social, environmental, political and international issues, and has bylines at The Associated Press, The Guardian, and NPR.

    In 2024, Marco earned his Master of Science degree at Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, as a John Chancellor Scholar, where he worked on stories about the pro-Palestine university encampments, and the New York City migrant influx.

    In 2021, he was happy to be offered a temporary position at NPR as a visuals editor, where he worked with the international desk on topics like the Taliban take over and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

    That same year, Marco earned a degree in International Photojournalism at the University of Missouri. During those years, he worked as a staff photographer and photo editor for the Columbia Missourian on stories about the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter protests, and the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Marco also worked as a volunteer for Pictures of the Year International (POYi) and College Photographer of the Year.

  • Claire Davenport is a freelance journalist based in New York City.

    Her stories in print and on the radio primarily focus on topics of healthcare and accessibility. She is a recent graduate from Columbia Journalism School and just finished an internship with " An Arm and a Leg," a podcast about the cost of healthcare. 

    Her work has been published in The Nation, Euractiv, and the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda. During her coverage of the campus protests in 2024, she appeared on The BBC, NPR, and Al Jazeera’sInside Story.” She is also a frequent contributor to the local news site West Side Rag.

    Before coming to Columbia, Claire worked at global nonprofit Ashoka, leading communications for their youth partnerships team and managing a global project to elevate the work of women innovators. She’s a lover of all-night dining, puns, and Oxford commas.

  • Sara Selva Ortiz is a Spanish audio reporter and producer based in Madrid. She is currently a political correspondent for Cadena SER, Spain's leading radio station, where she has spent the past seven years producing in-depth audio stories and covering both national and international news. Additionally, she has experience as a scriptwriter and producer for audio documentaries.

    In 2024, she graduated from the Master of Arts program at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism as a Fulbright fellow. Her coverage of the campus protests has been featured in El País, Cadena SER, and La Marea.

  • Claudia Gohn is a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in New York City and Virginia. Her coverage focuses on housing, disability, and activism. Claudia is also a multimedia video producer and teaching assistant at Barnard College, and helps run a small digital magazine called Grassroots Magazine NYC. Between freelancing and working, she is also earning her Master of Science at Columbia Journalism School. During the encampment, her coverage was featured in Rolling Stone, Hell Gate, and Revista Contexto. She’s continued reporting on student activism and recently published a story in Al Jazeera about student protesters returning to campus this fall amid heightened security, policy crackdowns, and disciplinary hearings.

  • Emily Byrski is a freelance multimedia journalist based in New York City and Florida telling stories about climate change, social and environmental justice, travel and the tourism industry, and international breaking news, through writing, photography, videography, and social media. 

    She previously worked in freelance digital marketing and content creation for over a decade, launching and managing successful digital strategies and campaigns for a number of international brands, and she is the founder of a successful lifestyle blog which, at its height, had an audience of over 100,000 followers across platforms. She is an avid traveler and has explored 51 countries to date (and counting). 

    In 2017, she received a bachelor’s degree from New York University in Marketing and Environmental Studies. In 2024, she received a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism

    While attending Columbia, much of her reporting focused on sustainability in the tourism industry, investigating such stories as the social implications of international frequent flier levies and the commercialization of culture for tourism consumption in rural Morocco. She was also the president of the Climate Reporter’s Network, an affiliate organization which brings together climate editors and reporters with future reporters. Her reporting and interviews have been featured in The Guardian, The Nation, The Independent, AP News, the BBC, Radio Con Vos (Argentina), NPR, CBS News, the Columbia News Service, and more.

  • Samaa Khullar is an investigative journalist based in New York City. Her work encompasses both journalism and social justice and explores issues including transnational identity, refugees and migration, gender and women’s issues, and Middle Eastern policy.

    Her works have been featured in New York Magazine, The Nation, Teen Vogue, AJ+, BBC, and New Lines Magazine, and has been interviewed by CNN and NBC Asian America.

    She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where she was a Toni Stabile Investigative fellow and received the annual Editorial Writing Award.

    She also attended New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute where she specialized in Journalism and Middle Eastern Studies, and received the Anna and Peter Zenger Award for Press Freedom.

  • Anna Oakes is a freelance journalist and audio producer based in New York City. In her recent work, she has covered refugee resettlement and immigration, urban toxic waste, and protest movements. Anna currently works as a producer for the bioethics department at Johns Hopkins University, where she is developing podcasts on medical ethics in conflict zones and health data privacy. She is the lead producer and co-host of Bot Love, a limited podcast series with Radiotopia. Her coverage of the encampment was featured in Rolling Stone, Hell Gate, Revista Contexto, RTE, and India Today.

  • Nandhini Srinivasan is an investigative reporter and a graduate of the Stabile program for Investigative Journalism at Columbia Journalism School. She is currently an investigative reporting fellow covering education and politics at The Tributary, a non-profit newsroom in Jacksonville, Florida. 

    She was previously a breaking news business and healthcare reporter for Reuters where she worked with the team to cover major deal stories including the Musk-Twitter deal, and UBS-Credit Suisse deal.

  • Brendan Rose is a freelance journalist working in New York City. His work has focused on climate change, local politics, and education.

    Before attending Columbia Journalism School, he published work on depleting freshwater reserves in Florida, the evacuation of American study abroad students from Hong Kong during student protests, and the history and architectural design of NYC public school buildings.

    At Columbia he focused more on investigative journalism, and his masters project on how NYC's top public schools discriminate against students with learning and physical disabilities was published in Chalkbeat. His coverage of the encampment was featured in the Brooklyn Eagle.

  • Indy Scholtens is a Dutch journalist based in Washington, D.C. She is currently a junior producer for the Dutch Public Broadcasting covering U.S. affairs for The Netherlands through radio, television, and online work. 

    Indy is a recent graduate of the Master of Science program at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where she focused on covering social and criminal justice and investigative reporting. 

    Her work has been featured in The Nation, NYFocus, Columbia News Service, and De Groene Amsterdammer. Her pictures have been featured in Vanity Fair, Bloomberg, and the New York Times. She has been interviewed by BBC India and Vanity Fair.

    Previously, Indy finished her double bachelor's degree in Business Analytics and Philosophy from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and was a political editor for De Kiesmannen.

  • Elza Goffaux is a French-Greek journalist and photographer. She covers immigration, labor and arts. She is currently a reporting fellow at Sahan Journal, a non-profit media based in the Twin Cities and telling the stories of immigrant communities, indigenous communities and communities of color in Minnesota.  

    She is a recent graduate of the Columbia University Journalism School. She has reported in Paris, Athens and Cairo and her work appeared in the French outlets Guiti News, L’Humanité, Politis and at the Agence France Presse. 

    Previously, she studied political sciences in the Middle East and the Mediterranean at SciencesPo Paris.

  • Sofia Mareque is a photographer, journalist, writer, and creative director based in New York City. She recently graduated from Columbia Journalism School with a Masters of Science in Journalism. She is passionate about the arts, cultural journalism, and dedicated to representing Black, Indigenous and People of Color authentically and telling their stories. Her work has been published in Vogue Philippines, Rolling Stone, and Columbia News Service.

  • Edward Lopez is a Reporter / Photojournalist who began his journalistic career in Fresno California at the California State University, Fresno student newspaper The Collegian while pursuing a Master's degree in History. Upon his graduation, Edward decided to pursue a career in journalism and applied to the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

    While at Columbia Edward reported upon myriad of issues including transportation, child welfare, and city politics. Edward's interest in photojournalism began after learning how to use a DSLR camera in Nina Berman’s Photo 1 course in the fall.

    Edward graduated from Columbia with a Master of Science in Journalism as well as earning the Louis Winnick award for his reporting of the Columbia University Encampment during the final weeks of the program.

  • Jude Taha is an Palestinian-Jordanian freelance visual and written journalist and editor based in Amman, Jordan. Jude is currently a full-time faculty lecturer at the Jordan Media Institute, where she teaches multimedia journalism. She is passionate about empowering youth through hyper-local reporting, dissecting mainstream narratives, and sharing stories often considered "too complicated" or "too niche" and thus ignored by the news cycle. 

    Jude is an advocate for freedom of speech and elevating marginalized voices, particularly in relation to intersectional identities. She is a recent graduate of Columbia Journalism School and covered Palestinian mobalization in New York and Columbia during the 2023/2024 academic year. During the encampment, Jude served as the the Columbia University correspondent for Palestine In America. She also served on the executive board of the Columbia chapter of AMEJA.

    Previously, she served as the senior managing editor of Jordan News, a daily newspaper based in Amman. Her reporting has appeared in Al Jazeera English, AJ+, DemocracyNow!, Al-Mamlaka TV, and The Washington Post.

  • Hoda Sherif is an investigative journalist and writer based between New York and Cairo. She is currently a news reporter with the Middle East Eye. Her work surrounds the psychological impact of humanitarian crises ranging from war and conflict to population displacement and forced starvation, with a focus on the Middle East.

    Her reporting and work has been featured in TIME magazine, The Nation, NPR, AJ+,  Mondoweiss, The Oxford Middle East Review, New Lines Magazine, and more. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism where she covered extensively the impact of Israel’s War on Gaza, U.S. foreign policy, and transgenerational legacies of trauma. 

    Previously, she attended American University where she majored in Public Relations with a specialization in Literature and Speechwriting, and a minor in Abnormal Psychology.
